SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine that aims to deliver real-time information from all across the internet, is OpenAI’s much-awaited debut into the search market.

OpenAI Enters Search Market with AI-Powered SearchGPT

In contrast to other search engines, SearchGPT asks users up front, in a big text box, “What are you looking for?” Instead of providing a simple list of links, SearchGPT aggregates and combines data. For example, while looking for music festivals, the search engine provides a summary of results along with brief event descriptions and links to the original sources.

Another example shows SearchGPT outlining various tomato types and providing information on when to plant them. Following the display of the findings, users have the option to click on a sidebar to access further pertinent resources or pose follow-up questions. Additionally, there is a feature called “visual answers,” the details of which OpenAI has not yet released.

Only 10,000 test users will be able to access SearchGPT at launch, as of right now, according to OpenAI spokeswoman Kayla Wood. The GPT-4 family of models powers the service, which has been enhanced with content feeds and contributions from other partners to improve search results. The ultimate objective is to incorporate SearchGPT functionalities straight into ChatGPT.

This move presents a possible threat to Google, which has been quickly incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities into its own search engine in order to keep one step ahead of rivals. With this strategy, OpenAI also puts itself in opposition to businesses such as Perplexity, an AI “answer” engine that was previously under fire for allegedly plagiarizing information in its summaries.

It seems that OpenAI is confronting these issues head-on. The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press, Vox Media, the parent company of The Verge, and other news partners were involved in the development of SearchGPT, the business noted in a blog post. “News partners gave valuable feedback, and we continue to seek their input,” Wood said.

With OpenAI entering the search space, everyone is watching to see how SearchGPT will influence internet search and information retrieval in the future. Watch this space for updates on this revolutionary discovery.
