The Roads and Transport Authority said Thursday that Dubai Metro will begin operations on Sunday, January 12, at 5:00 am rather than 8:00 am.

In order to provide seamless transit for the Dubai Marathon, which is scheduled for that day, the metro schedules are being extended.

Thousands of participants will go out on the road at 6am for the 42km challenge in the 24th edition of the wildly popular marathon. The Dubai Sports Council is in charge of organizing it.

It will begin and end across from the Madinat Jumeirah on Umm Suqeim Road. There are three races: a 42-kilometer marathon, a 10-kilometer run, and a 4-kilometer fun run.

Lelisa Desisa, a former World Marathon Champion, will return to the site of one of his most memorable triumphs when he joins the elite group of world-class competitors on Sunday, according to the official Dubai Marathon website. The now 34-year-old Ethiopian won the Dubai Marathon in 2013 and posted a personal best time of 2:04:45.

Since 1998, the emirate has held the Dubai Marathon every year, which is a road-based event.
