The NZD/USD pair is trading higher by more than 1%, trading around 0.5690 during Asian business hours on Wednesday. Technical analysis on the daily chart indicates a persistent downward bias, as the pair’s price remains within a descending channel pattern.
NZD/USD remains below the bearish 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA), retaining the broader bearish bias, while a bounce above the nine-day EMA indicates improving near-term momentum.
Short-term moving averages indicate the basis, with the nine-day EMA acting as initial support while the 50-day EMA limits the bounce. A sustained move through the latter would improve the outlook. Failure to hold above the nine-day EMA would keep downside risks alive.
The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 52.0 (neutral) has turned higher and supports a moderate recovery. The RSI near the midline confirms stabilizing momentum that may enable an extension.
On the downside, the NZD/USD pair could find its immediate support at the crucial level at 0.5650, followed by the nine-day moving average at 0.5640. A break below this confluence support area would reinforce the bearish bias and push the pair to test the lower limit of the descending channel around 0.5550, followed by the five-year low at 0.5485, which was recorded on April 9, 2025.
The immediate barrier is at the 0.5700 psychological level, followed by the upper boundary of the descending channel around 0.5720, which is in line with the 50-day EMA at 0.5725. A daily close above the 50-day moving average could shift the bias towards more upside and support NZD/USD to explore the area around the three-month high of 0.6008, reached on September 17.
